The sun shines in Cuba almost throughout the year but mainly from April to October. This is great for visitors to Cuba, but can also be a burden if you do not protect yourself against the suns harmful rays… no one wants burnt skin on holiday!

The best sunscreen products are based on zinc oxide and titanium dioxide pastes because they make good barriers against the sun’s rays, but they do tend to make skin look white. New ‘micronized’ formulations minimise this problem, however. There are reputable fabricants such as: Ambre Solaire, Vichy, Vaseline Intensive Care’s range, Piz Buin and Boot’s Soltan.

Here are some helpful hints to make the most of the sunshine in Cuba!

  • SPFs measure how much time in the sun your skin can tolerate before burning: if your skin normally burns after fifteen minutes, in Cuba skin specialists recommend to use a sun cream with at least 30 SPF value and water resistant properties.
  • Stay in the sun as little as possible. Always try at first to expose your body gradually to the sun, without exceeding maximum recommended sun exposure time, depending on your skin type.
  • If your are going to take a swim in the beach or in a pool, try to make it in the morning or in the afternoon and avoid sun exposure between 10.00 a.m. – 3.00 p.m. Always remember that UV rays can harm you even when it is cloudy.
  • Always use sun protection, not only on the beach but also when walking or driving.
  • It’s recommended that you wear a hat and white clothes as these reflect the suns radiation more effectively.
  • Apply your sun care cream uniformly to achieve protection from harmful sun radiation. You should repeat application every two hours.

With the right sun protection you will help to make sure you have the time of your life visiting our country!
